When Kariann Harker and Jerrod Bohannon couldn't find healthy food for their pit bull, Ruby, they didn't just solve the problem for themselves — they turned it into a business that's serving their entire community.
The husband-and-wife team launched Pet Wants Colorado Springs, starting mobile and growing through local markets and community events. The approach is working. "We've had steady growth every month since we opened," Bohannon said.
Their story is a great example of what makes Pet Wants a natural fit for family teams. The mobile-first model let them ease into ownership on their own terms — Bohannon kept his corporate marketing role while Harker ran day-to-day operations full-time. Different strengths, one shared vision.
"It's daunting enough starting a business, so doing it with your spouse is great — you always have someone to lean on," Harker said.
Now they're preparing to open a physical location, a milestone that reflects both their growth and the community's response to what they've built.
Pet industry media outlet 1851 Franchise recently featured their journey — and it's worth a read for anyone curious about what building a Pet Wants business actually looks like from the inside.
