Meet Pet Wants Franchise Owners Chuck and Ewa Ryan

Why this husband-wife team brought our pet food franchise to Chicagoland

When they discovered Pet Wants, Chuck Ryan and his wife, Ewa, were looking for an investment opportunity that could provide her with a change of pace from her hectic career as an architect. Ewa grew up on a farm in Poland and knew she wanted to do something that involved pets, Chuck recalls.

“We were looking for something that was the opposite of what she was doing” in architecture, Chuck says. They loved pets — they had adopted three rescue dogs, recently — and Ewa was gravitating towards something in that industry. “She would periodically do house sitting for family and friends who went out of town who had dogs. She really has an affinity for dogs, a real soft spot in her heart for them.”

Pet Wants is a premium pet food franchise that offers pet owners an alternative to the made-last-year bagged food that’s been sitting in warehouses or on store shelves. Our premium pet food is manufactured from whole ingredients — there are no by-products in Pet Wants foods — every 30 days and delivered in bulk to the franchisee. The result is a nutrition-rich, delicious food that is better for pets and doesn’t devastate owners’ pocketbooks. With two franchise models available — a mobile delivery model and a retail store model — Pet Wants is growing rapidly. Chuck and Ewa believe they know why.

When Goliath, one of their beloved rescue dogs, began to show signs of stomach troubles, they knew pet food might be playing a role. That’s how they discovered Pet Wants.

“We ordered food for delivery to the house, then we filled out the application,” Chuck says. “Within a week, we realized that Goliath’s stomach was doing a lot better on that food. That’s what intrigued us more to pursue it as a business.”

They opened a retail location of Pet Wants in September 2016, and they haven’t looked back. Customers are responding to the store in a powerful way, Chuck says.

“They’re intrigued by the notion that the food is fresh,” he says. “I think that we have an advantage here, not having to convince people that fresh is a better way to go. A lot of consumers aren’t very aware that they do have choices — that fresher food is out there and it does make a difference.”

Chuck and Ewa’s story is all too common among Pet Wants owners. They found a product that makes a difference for their animals, and now they’re bringing that product to animal lovers in their communities. For Pet Wants franchisees, passion for animal welfare plays a huge part of the business.

“You have to be passionate about dogs, about wanting to help and serve people,” Chuck says. “That’s why it was a perfect fit for us. We have three dogs of our own. It’s nice and reassuring to see people come in with their dogs and see the dog wagging its tail because you’re giving it a treat.”
